Memorial Day, for me, has always marked the true beginning of summer. It is a time when I am particularly grateful to be surrounded by so many beautiful lakes, and when it's nice, our wonderful Michigan weather. Not too humid, not too dry, just the right amount of soft breeze. But the best part about Memorial Day weekend has always been the St. Mary’s Fair. Whether I attend or not, just passing by I am flooded with the memories of younger years. I loved everything about it. Stuffed animals given by boys. The thrill of a ride that any other day I would have been too afraid to go on. The melting of colorful spun sugar on my tongue. And mostly, my first taste of independence. This year, instead of just admiring the fair out of my car window as I drove pass, I went. By actually hearing the excitement of someone winning a carnival game, and smelling the elephant ears being deep fried in the distance, I was able to enhance all of these cherished memories. Carnivals promote a carefree state of mind, and that is what makes them so special.
